Why pre-trial detention in Mauritius can last eight years

A closer look at how delayed forensic reports and procedural backlog keep foreign detainees locked up for years without a verdict.

Drug trafficking and importation to Mauritius is a serious problem for the local population, and the government takes strict action. But the consequences for foreign detainees are terrible.

The bottleneck

FSL reports can take years to prove the quality and quantity of seized products. The IT-unit faces similar delays. Meanwhile, the detainee waits in pre-trial detention — counting the years.

What we ask

We ask for dignity, for a fair and timely trial, and for the humane treatment that every human being is owed — innocent until proven guilty.
